The Journey to Better Illustrations

I’ve been searching for my creative spark for a long time, do you ever really lose it? When I entered the corporate world, I became another cog in the great big wheel of the 9-5. I tried really hard to bring my creative color into a dark and grey world. I’ve been in the design game for about seven years and I like to think that I’ve been able to shine some color into the corporate industry. As the years have gone by it seems that I try to find different ways to express my creativity. What outlets have I missed? Why do I even design? Is it worth the continual heartache dealing with clients? Are aliens real?….wait that last one doesn’t fit. All those questions always lead me back to my roots, art. Getting back to my roots always reconnects me with my creativity. Now that I’ve finally figured out a path for my upcoming career (stay tuned!) it’s time to prep!

I always really loved illustration, now that doesn’t mean that I’m a pro, because I’ve definitely got some things to learn. But practice makes perfect, this is my journey to better illustrations, better creativity, better processes. In this series, I’ll be showing you the purest and honest illustrations straight from my brain, all the way from sketches to the final product; which hopefully will result in some pretty awesome pieces. The pieces that I totally fall in love with, I’ll make them into some kind of product so you can love them just as much as I do –up in my etsy shop! Don’t be shy, take a look share it around tell your grandma!

Let’s do this! I love icons. I use them a lot at work to just add a little extra oomph to a boring list. Now that I’m pushing my personal brand more I wanted to create some custom icons that I really love and that fit my brand somehow. I decided to just do a brain dump of graphic things and just sketch it all out. It didn’t take me very long to pick two that I really liked. The lightbulb and the pencil. I really liked drawing them short and chubby, they have a little more character.

Taking those short and chubby icons and working them into banners for my social media profiles is probably where those two little guys will live now. That’s my process to a T, brain dump, draw and then produce. All accompanied by awesome music to fuel my creativeness.
